Looking to cut energy costs and boost comfort year-round? A dual fuel heat pump system might be the upgrade your home needs. Thanks to FortisBC rebates, homeowners in Kelowna and the Okanagan region can now save up to $5,000 when they switch from an older gas furnace to a more energy-efficient system. It’s a smart investment that pays off in comfort, savings, and peace of mind.

What Is a Dual Fuel Heat Pump System?

A dual fuel system combines the best of both worlds: an electric air source heat pump for everyday heating and cooling, and a gas furnace for colder snaps when you need an extra boost. Together, they keep your home comfortable no matter the season, while using significantly less energy than a standard gas furnace alone.

In warmer weather, the heat pump works like a high-efficiency air conditioner. When outdoor temperatures drop below a set point (like 2°C in the Southern Interior), the system automatically switches to the gas furnace for added heat. It’s seamless, efficient, and far quieter than traditional systems.

Why More Kelowna Homeowners Are Making the Switch

There’s a reason dual fuel systems are growing in popularity. Here’s what makes them a great fit for homes in Kelowna and the surrounding area:

●       Lower Energy Bills: Heat pumps can reduce heating costs by up to 70 percent compared to older gas furnaces

●       Cool in the Summer: Your system works year-round, offering efficient cooling during the Okanagan’s hot summers

●       Quieter Operation: No more noisy outdoor units or furnace blasts. These systems run smoothly and quietly

●       Smaller Carbon Footprint: Using less gas means fewer greenhouse gas emissions

●       Rebates That Make It Affordable: With up to $5,000 in rebates from FortisBC, plus potential CleanBC top-ups, the upgrade makes financial sense.

Whether you’re renovating or simply looking for a way to cut energy costs long term, this upgrade can make your home more comfortable and future-ready.

How the FortisBC Rebate Works

FortisBC is helping homeowners make the switch with a $5,000 rebate when you replace your older gas furnace with a qualifying dual fuel system. On top of that, you could stack additional savings, including:

●       $150 for installing a smart (connected) thermostat

●       $300 if you complete a second eligible home upgrade

●       Up to $3,000 more through CleanBC’s Northern top-up (for qualifying homes north of 100 Mile House)

These rebates are part of a larger effort by FortisBC, CleanBC, and the Government of Canada to support cleaner, more efficient home heating.

To qualify, here’s what you’ll need:

●       Your current gas furnace must be at least 10 years old

●       The new system must be installed by a Technical Safety BC licensed contractor who is a member of the Home Performance Contractor Network

●       The heat pump and furnace must be on FortisBC’s eligible product list and meet minimum efficiency ratings

●       The thermostat must be programmed to switch over at 2°C or lower for homes in the Southern Interior

●       Your application must be submitted within six months of installation

Visit the FortisBC website for complete details and to confirm eligibility for your home and region. We can also help advise/guide you through the rebate application process.
